Whether you're a Vegas Shoot veteran or a first timer, it's easy to get overwhelmed at the largest archery tournament in the world. Everyone's looking forward to shooting their best and having a good time, and for most people, this is a big part of their archery year – if not the biggest. We spoke to some of archery's top pros about their best tips for surviving the three days of shooting coming up.

You've probably heard the advice to take each day as it comes. Of course, the most important thing is knowing exactly when and where you'll be shooting, and planning around that. Check your registration email for details of your line times, and don't forget to check the map of the venues. We're hoping things should be a little less crowded this time, but you should always leave just a little more time than you think you will need.

We asked Dave Cousins, multiple Vegas champion and one of the most decorated archers of all time for his best tip on surviving the three days. He said: “Probably the best piece of advice I can offer to anyone trying to reach a final in Vegas is not to focus on the goal, but to focus on your process.” He's right, of course. The pros concentrate solely on the rhythm and the process needed to deliver a strong shot. The more you make it incredibly important that you squeeze that last arrow into the 10 ring for a 300 day, the more likely it is that you'll be sending it into the nine. In a similar vein, you should avoid altering your usual shot during competition – though it's surprising how many people try this. When we caught hold of Olympic medallist Casey Kaufhold, she said: "Just go out there and do what you do in practise. If I go out there and shoot how I shoot in practise, I know it’s always good. So just try to replicate your shot in practise as best you can."

2023 Vegas champion Kris Schaff said: "Don’t miss! That’s the name of the game here!" with a smile, before adding: "Don’t overthink the tournament. Don’t put too much hype on yourself. It’s the same distance. The same amount of arrows." Vegas can be an overwhelming place, with bright lights, late nights, and non-stop action both on and off the shooting line. World number one and 2024 women's championship runner-up Ella Gibson emphasised taking care of yourself. "My best tips are to get as much sleep and rest as you can, to stay hydrated and get some fresh air and sunlight. It’s easy to get caught up in everything 'Vegas' and forget to look after yourself staying in the venue all week," she said. With so much happening at the Vegas Shoot, it’s easy to get caught up in the buzz, but the best archers know that success comes from sticking to their routine, staying focused, and taking care of themselves. Whether you’re here to win, set a personal best, or just soak in the experience, remember that every archer on the line has the same goal: to shoot their best and enjoy the tournament.

No matter how your weekend goes, the Vegas Shoot is about more than just scores—it’s about the energy, the people, and the love of the sport. Take in the moment, make some great memories, and... don’t miss.
