Stepping onto the shooting line at The Vegas Shoot can feel overwhelming for any archer. The scale of the event, the energy of the venue, and the level of competition are unlike anything else in the sport. Feeling nervous is natural. Setting clear, realistic goals before the tournament begins is one of the most effective ways to manage those nerves and build confidence.
If you are one of the archers competing in the Flights divisions, you are in good company. The Flights include the largest group of competitors at The Vegas Shoot and bring together archers of similar performance levels, creating fair and meaningful competition across the field. For Rookies, the Flights offer an ideal environment to focus on personal goals rather than overall rankings. Success should be measured through consistency, strong execution, and steady improvement from day to day. By shooting within your normal performance range, avoiding unnecessary risks, and staying committed to your process, you give yourself the best opportunity to compete confidently, enjoy the experience, and potentially even earn a Flights cash prize along the way.
When setting goals for any division, they should reflect your current ability and the level of preparation to which you are willing to commit. While it is not uncommon for archers to leave Vegas with a personal best, it is more realistic and more productive to expect an average score for yourself. Consistency builds confidence, and confidence builds performance.
Score, however, should never be the only goal. Executing your normal shot routine, maintaining focus, and shooting with confidence from the first arrow to the last should remain top priorities. Mistakes will happen at every level of competition. One of the most valuable goals is maintaining composure and recovering quickly when things do not go as planned. Staying calm, committing to your routine, and moving forward without carrying frustration into the next arrow are skills that support long-term success.
For many competitors, success at The Vegas Shoot extends beyond score. Goals may include competing with confidence, learning from fellow archers, and leaving better prepared for next year. One of the most important goals of all is simply to enjoy the experience, make lifelong archery friends, take in the atmosphere, and don’t hesitate to lean on your Mentor for guidance and perspective throughout the event. Nerves are natural, and often they are simply excitement in another form; the same excitement that has helped build The Vegas Shoot into one of the greatest events in archery.
The Grow the Line initiative exists to support new competitors and strengthen the future of the sport. By setting attainable goals, trusting your process, and embracing the experience, Rookie archers can step onto the Vegas shooting line with confidence, pride, and purpose.
